Harlee Manor resident celebrates 101st birthday!
On March 31, 2010 Bill DeCaro celebrated his 101st birthday. Joining in the celebration were his wife, Marie (100 years young), their daughter, Ann Marie DeCaro, and other family members and friends at Harlee Manor and Springfield Senior Commons. Residents and family alike all enjoyed the traditional cake and ice cream that was served.
Mr. DeCaro, a native of West Philadelphia, met his wife Marie at the tender age of 16 while attending Madame Duval’s Dance School in 1924. They spent five years together performing in a traveling vaudeville act. In 1929 the couple married at the ages of 20 and 19 and later had four children, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
When in his mid-teens, Bill held three weight lifting records, hand-clean lifting, dead lift and hand press. At age 21, he began his professional career with Sun Life Insurance and sold life insurance for Sun Life for 43 years. His career was interrupted temporarily while he served in the US Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines.
Harlee Manor has been Bill and Marie’s home for several years. They are the only centenarians at Harlee Manor and are still going strong. “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate Bill’s 101st birthday with him and to host his immediate family and his Harlee Manor family,” said Michelle Russo, Executive Director at Harlee Manor.
